Now for something different

While we are waiting for bootleg from either Jason’s trip last week to Chicago or from his show in Fort Wayne today, I bring you the latest video in the “Where the Hell is Matt” Dancing videos.

In case you have not previously run across Matt, he is Matt Harding, a game designer who, while traveling the world several years ago, put together a video of himself doing his “stupid dance” in one famous place after the other. When it went viral, he started doing more of these videos. As he went on, he included underwater dancing, zero-gravity dancing, different places each time, and then adding people from all over.

This time he’s not just doing his stupid dance any more:

Because we appreciate history…

As I mentioned last year (and the year before), it used to be that on every 4th of July, in every town square and large park and gathering place in the United States, someone would get up and read the Declaration of Independence to the assembled revelers. It may be two hundred and thirty-six years since it was written, but those words still evoke all the courage and dignity and idealism and determination it took to make such a radical and irrevocable break with tradition and family and history. So gather round and listen up, kids:

IN CONGRESS, July 4, 1776

When in the Course of human events it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. — That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, — That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. There’s the why. So please take a minute or two to remember the people who, quite literally, put their Lives and Fortunes and sacred Honor on the line to make this an independent country. And then enjoy your picnics and parades and fireworks. A safe and happy Independence Day to all!
